Ourstory

So often people use the phrase “now, more than ever we need…” and it can seem so cliché. But I feel like the phrase is rather appropriate for such a time as this QueenSiS. Now, more than ever, we need to lean into the lessons from our African and Black History.

And beyond the books and documentaries, we would be wise to learn as much as we can from our ‘living libraries’, our elders. I think that’s what makes it ‘Ourstory’ - its history with the appropriate perspective for our lives.  I hear the lyrics from Black Butterfly (hat tip indeed to the timeless and brilliant Sounds of Blackness) as a cautionary tale: “What’s going on? Truth not revealed unless they choose to see; past generations lost in history; to hide our culture and identity.” #ourstory
